Before Samsung, Motorola, Apple, LG, and the rest of the crowd got into the smartwatch game, Casio had been there and done that. Back in the 90s. The Verge recently ran a story covering a range of watches currently on display at Casio's late founder's home in Japan, and we're not playing when we say that Casio had that shit on lock. Everything you can think of in a watch, Casio had frankensteined at one point or another, the above 3 watches for example, dropped in 2000 & 2001 and had color fucking cameras on your wrist, we're talking 15 years ago.
Discover more of the historic/futuristic Casio wristpieces below, and head to The Verge for the full story.
1999: Built-in voice recorder - Nothing too crazy, but cool for its time nonetheless
1994: Built-in UV sensor and skin type meter keeps you safe outdoors. I don't know if aesthetics could speak "90s" more than this shit.
1991: A touch screen. In 1991. Also packed a calculator, notepad, organizer & phone book. In 1991.
1994: Built-in Thermo-scanner calculates the surface temperature of objects using infrared. Doubt there was any form of mass appeal to this one, but I'm sure engineers and those on-site folks dug this.
2004: Contactless payments with Speedpass. Before NFC and Apple Pay shit, Casio fucked with contactless payments over a decade ago.
1993: Who doesn't remember these, controlling your TV and VCR with your wrist was straight sci-fi. Also had us trying to switch off every TV we came across in public.
1993: Built-in compass specifically to direct Muslims towards Mecca for prayer. Talk about having something for everyone.
1994: Built-in antenna detects when your phone is ringing and vibrates on your wrist to notify you.
1994 & 1995: Infrared beam let you play a basic rock, paper, scissors style game with other cool kids rocking the same timepiece.
2000: The world's first wrist-mounted MP3 player. Workouts haven't been the same since.
1999: Built-in GPS. Most smartwatches these days don't even have one yet.
1991: With all the hype surrounding fitbits and I don't know what else, Casio was with you counting your calories, steps and distance 24 years ago.
1991: Another fitness related piece, this one kept an eye out on your heart rate and blood pressure, also 24 year ago.
